Dear Graduation Project Judges:
For my project I taught some simple American Sign Language to a kindergarten class. My research paper was about how sign language can facilitate in a young child’s learning. I chose this topic because I had taken American Sign Language my freshman and sophomore years and it was something I really took pleasure in. I truly love the language and the culture; I hoped to be able to share that with others.
While completing my project I discovered I do not like working with children. They were very energetic and talkative and I had to be very patient with them. I had to constantly fight for their attention, and I actually found this experience sort of exhausting. I also found that I am more confident about myself. My lessons went along very well and I got many compliments from the teacher of the class I taught. Knowing that I did well has boosted my confidence. I am sure that in the future when speaking in front of others I will me sure of myself and I will not have to be so nervous.0
Amidst all the work I had to do some parts were more difficult than others. The easiest component of my project was making the power points and games I needed to teach my lessons. These things did take some time but they were not complicated. By far the most arduous part of my project was writing my lesson plans. I wanted to make sure I was getting everything I wanted the children to learn into them and I wanted to make them as fun as possible. I was constantly revising them and I ended up with about five different versions of each lesson plan. In the end I was satisfied, and judging by how well my classes turned out I was able to write quality lessons. All of the experiences I have gotten over the course of this project have taught me things that will assist me and better prepare me for the future. I have learned how to manage my time to get the greatest use out of it, and I have learned how to be patient and confident. These are all things that will aid me in the unknown and unpredictable future.
Sincerely,
Kayla Phillips
